money savers

recently i have been praying for God to send us more money. after praying that for a while and nothing really happening, i started changing my prayer. my prayer now is that we will find ways to spend less. i figured if we weren't going to make any more money, we could figure out how to spend less!
so i just wanted to share a few things that i have been doing and how they are saving us money. some of these things you can do, some are just answered prayers for us :)
  • angel food ministry. this is a great ministry. it is pretty much a nationwide program that gets food at wholesale and then puts them together in "boxes" and sells them to the public at really cheep prices. and the food is really good.
  • "time of usage" through your power company. now we haven't gotten our first bill yet, but we have high hopes! your power company has a program that allows you to use your power at "on peak" and "off peak" rates. in order for it to work, you have to make a conscience effort to use your major appliances during off peak times (which during the winter is 1-4pm, after 9pm and all weekend). we will update this once we have actual prices to show how it worked for us! we are also unplugging all major appliances when we are not using them.
  • the grocery game. it is a website that gives you a "list" for a particular grocery store that matches up the grocery store's sale prices and coupons so that you can get things really cheep. the idea is that within a 12 week cycle everything will be on sale (one week will be paper products, the next week might be canned goods) so you stock up on things when they are really cheep. i have just started this. today i bought $50 worth of groceries and paid $31. i will let you know how this goes.
  • ppd gets a discount at alltel (this is one that is just exciting for us). we just found out and put into affect the discount... it is 15%! yea!
ok that is all i can think of for now. if you have any ways to save money, please share ;)

memory lane

a few good old friends stopped by tonight for an early thanksgiving... agd style.
it was great to get together with friends and laugh... and chuckle... and giggle (get the picture). we enjoyed some scrumptious food including some moist turkey. it was so nice to take a trip down memory lane. we even watched some old video... some very old video of us at talent show. ahh the memories.
well here are some pictures to commemorate the evening!

jack graciously watched the kids in the other room... they came out for a few minutes so brooke could show off her new head butts :)

some high fives to finish off the evening :)

life with hana

today a couple of notable things happened with hana. nothing too bad, but worth sharing.

on the way to preschool we passed a construction sight (with piles and piles of sand) and hana asked what they were doing. i told her that they were building something. she said "i think they are building a sandcastle"... priceless.

on the way home from preschool hana seemed a bit upset so i asked her what was wrong. she said that she didn't get a sticker from "ms. lisa". i asked her why... she said "because i wasn't doing what i was supposed to". i asked what she didn't do. she said that she didn't sing during singing time. (it is a good time to stop and reiterate hana's love for singing. she is constantly singing... to brooke... to me... to nobody. it doesn't matter, she is singing). when i said "but hana you love to sing, why didn't you sing" she said "i didn't want to sing with anyone else".

ok so we now know that hana would much rather sing by herself than in a group... ummm ok. nice to learn that she really does like being the center of attention.

finding me in the mothering adventure

i found this article in an older momsense magazine (the magazine for MOPS). i had planned to share it earlier but forgot... i found it again while i was cleaning (go figure!) and thought that this is as good of a time as any to share it. it really spoke to me, so enjoy!

Finding 'Me' in the Mothering Adventure + Don't Turn the Heat Off Your Passion
Letting go of who you were to become who you are.
by Beth K. Vogt

As a mom of preschoolers, I often felt as though I'd experienced identity theft.

While nursing my newborn or helping my preschoolers conquer the twisty slide at the park, I wondered, What happened to me? Where did I go in the midst of all this mommy madness?

There were days—weeks, months—when I fought how my life changed after I'd left the delivery room. This wasn't the life I dreamed of in college: an exhausted mother of three kiddos whose pleasure reading was limited to the back of cereal boxes.

I needed to remember the breathing exercises I practiced oh-so-diligently in childbirth classes: Breathe in. Breathe out. Deep cleansing breath. Relax.

I had to let go and embrace the reality that motherhood is a life-altering adventure. Becoming a mom changed me. The challenge? To discover the new "me" that now included the label "Mom."

Pericles, an ancient Greek statesman, understood the wisdom of accepting change: "Change is the essence of life. Be willing to surrender what you are for what you could become."

During my early mothering years, I had to give up some of my rigid expectations, timelines and dreams (but not all of them—I'll get to that later). As this process refined me, I began to see myself in a different light.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, "To everything there is a season." Stay-at-home mom, single mom, working mom: No matter what other adjectives describe your life, you are a mom. There will be days when you feel as though you've lost yourself among your children's demands. Sick kids. Sibling squabbles. Sometimes all you can do is to be content with who you are—and where you are—now.

When I first became a mom, I had to relinquish some of the things I valued. My stretch-mark free body. My "I've got it all handled" schedule. My professional identity as an editorial assistant. My expectations—both big and small. Life was no longer all about me. How could it be? Within six short years, I was surrounded by three preschoolers who had their own needs. Their own expectations. Their own identities.

Yes, there were days I looked in the mirror and wondered, Who is that woman—and why doesn't she fix her hair? Life was all about trying to soothe a fussy baby who couldn't tell me what hurt where. I had to learn how to endure—I mean, enjoy, a slow walk to the park while my preschoolers looked at every stick, rock, flower and ant along the way.

I ignored my dream of writing magazine articles and focused instead on being the mom my children needed. Most days, their need for cuddles and stories and discipline trumped my longing for me-time, be that "all by myself" time or "I need to talk to another adult" time.

Sometimes all I could think about was what I had given up: my job, my independence. My days were no longer my own. I couldn't just get up and go when and where I wanted to—not with small children who needed naps and schedules and play dates.

Life with preschoolers is so up-close and personal. And God used all that intimate togetherness to rub off my rough spots. To refine me. To reveal my weaknesses and my strengths.

I found "me" in the mothering adventure by:

  • Accepting my identity was forever changed by my children's births. I even discovered some new passions, such as teaching women's Bible studies—and eventually training other women to teach.

  • Facing the heartbreaking truth I had an anger problem. My children were the reason I sought counseling, prayed for healing and found the strength to overcome my anger.

  • Learning it's OK to cry when life is tough—and sometimes it's better to laugh. What are you going to do when your kindergartner treats a handcrafted gingerbread house like a mid-morning snack?

  • Discovering I'm stronger than I ever imagined. I persevered through times when I wanted to resign from motherhood—facing off with strong-willed toddlers who thought "no" meant "I dare you," and surviving childhood illnesses that put our house into quarantine for weeks at a time.

Back then I couldn't perceive who I was becoming. But now I see through the crystal-clear lens of 25 years of mommy experience.

I am who I am today—because I'm a mom.

Yes, in ways both big and small, I surrendered parts of myself while my children were growing up. I had to let go of my innate selfishness. My ego. My ambition—at least some of it. What I didn't realize is that God also used my children to help me find myself.

Can you be somebody without being a mom? Sure. But that's not the question. The question is: Can you be somebody and be a mom?

Yes. It just may be someone you never expected to be.

When I finally took the time to renew my passion for writing, I realized how motherhood had transformed me. I had a wealth of story ideas, thanks to my three older children and my surprise "caboose baby" who was born when I was 41. Becoming a mom made me a better writer and editor. I focused on my long-delayed desire. I multitasked in ways I'd never before imagined. And I was much more efficient with my time—because I had to be!

It's true you'll have to postpone some of your dreams, some of your wants when you become a mom. But this doesn't mean you've lost yourself in these preschool years.

Stop for just a moment. Breathe in. Breathe out.

Let God use this time in your life to help you become someone—the you he wants you to be.

MB + meeting santa

some friends and i made our (kind of) annual trip to myrtle. it is such a treat to get away from the stress of daily life and spend some time with wonderful girlfriends. as always we had some interesting stories... one in particular in trying to locate a store. it was a new store to me and is now one of my new favorites... anthropologie.
we had a wonderful time! thanks for spending the weekend with me ladies!! what fun! i can't wait to (hopefully) do it again next year!!

here we have windi, kj , and me (tara left before we took this one... sorry tara!)

while i was having a great time in mb, jack was home with the girls. he took them to see santa at the mall (santa made his arrival on saturday). apparently hana didn't want to get too close.

waiting to see santa (you can tell daddy fixed her hair)

here she is checking him out from the safety behind the fence

when i got home today i met jack and the girls at the mall. we walked down to see santa again. because this time that i had no camera... of course hana sat on santa's lap for quite a while. he asked her what she wanted for christmas and she said candy canes (there was a huge basket of them next to santa). he asked her again what she wanted and she said presents. i wonder how long she won't care what she gets...

monkey see... monkey do

hana has become brooke's new role model. brooke is happy to copy just about anything hana does.
one afternoon the girls were playing. hana loves to make up songs and "preform" them standing on her stool. she happily sings them to her "audience". she makes up many a creative song. anyway, this one afternoon i walk by and see hana passionately singing on the stool. about five minutes later, i walk by again and what do i see? you guessed it... brooke singing gibberish on the same stool with the same amount of passion.

brooke also likes to copy hana's hairstyles. it has taken me three years to get hana to leave anything in her hair. with all of that hard work i am not about to turn brooke away at such a tender young age.
on this particular morning hana wanted pig tales...
of course brooke wanted the same... her look is just slightly different than hana's!

already?

jack got off of work early today to vote. well it only took us about 15 minutes to vote so we decided to walk around the mall and get our free starbucks for voting (it was just a regular coffee so no mishaps could happen). i took my camera to practice taking pictures of kids in motion. well i caught something that i just had to share... christmas decorations!! i mean i love christmas just as much, well probably more, than the next guy. i admit that i have already listened to some chirstmas music (the casting crowns new christmas cd is GREAT!!) and the girls have already worn christmas pjs. but even i know that it is too early to put up the decorations!! somehow we go from halloween to christmas... sigh... poor thanksgiving!
